Fresh analysis suggests that patients who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Research printed in a leading health publication points out that while obese people can lose about a fifth of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.
"People buying such drugs need to be aware of the danger of quick rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of regain means a return to starting weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, contrasted the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
The team point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise typically experience a less rapid creep back—perhaps 100 grams monthly—post-intervention.
Understanding the Quick Rebound
Doctors propose the way of the injections is key to understanding the amplified weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' means appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating much more probable."
A Lifelong Issue?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, given the significant potential of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the findings "emphasize the chronic nature of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like diabetes.
Patient Experiences
People who have discontinued the jabs report a intense return of cravings.
"I experienced something activating and you become ravenous," described an individual.
This difficulty is compounded if users have not adopted lasting dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the past year, with demand continuing to grow.
- Adoption is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
Ultimately, experts emphasize that while the jabs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on integrated lifestyle changes.
