A deadly train crash in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key government projects.
The accident took place on the trans-isthmus railway, a route developed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was intended to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving commercial progress in the area.
“We are going to meticulously determine what caused this incident,” stated the country's president.
The president reported that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in critical condition. The president noted plans to go to Oaxaca to meet those impacted.
Major Initiative of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency finished the prior year. This project was closely associated with his administration's economic vision for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious rail project from that era, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to revitalize the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Worries
The building of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in public infrastructure. They were completed at an accelerated rate, defying forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that presidency.
However, this rushed timetable had also fueled persistent concerns over safety standards.
- Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
- This includes an previous crash this month when a train struck a truck at a crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-lethal derailments.
Appeals for Review and Suspension
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This stoppage was suggested pending a full safety audit. The party stated that the situation "demands prompt explanations."
In reaction, the head of state maintained that the train had been running in total accordance with all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would remain "responsible" in both the development and operation of these vital projects.
